Working with the flow means working in tune with our own biorhythms, the rhythms of others who affect us, and the universe as a whole. By doing this we allow energy from the universe to move down into our personality in order to work with being and doing time simultaneously. Using this system of time management, we call clients when the time “feels right” and we start projects, continue them and complete them using the same sensitivity.
As we all know, there is a great deal of energy needed to start something new. It’s harder to write the first 50 pages of a book than the last 50, because a momentum is created and the book starts writing itself. I agree with Aristotle who said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act; but a habit.” If we repeatedly practice something we improve and become consistently excellent. When we spend time working with the flow we accomplish far more with less effort.
Finding the optimum conditions for creation in the workplace is not always easy, but this is what we must try to do. Is your work environment conducive to creativity and happiness? Some of us prefer four day work weeks; others need to have an office window; still others are more productive if they walk outside during lunch hour. It’s time for organizations to start paying people for what they produce, and not for how many hours they sit at their desks. If someone can accomplish the same result in half the time, they should be rewarded for their productivity. Moreover, they should be able to choose their rewards. Some might want money; others might prefer time off; still others might prefer to work at home. Working from nine to five, five days a week, is a leftover concept from the industrial age and it is not the best work cycle for some people.
Being attuned to what the universe wants and working with the flow has led me into fascinating circumstances. Many years ago I was invited to conduct a sacred ceremony at the ancient serpent mounds in Peterborough, Ontario with a native man named John whom I had never met and about whom I knew nothing. I had a sense that I should accept and did so. The day arrived and many people gathered for the ceremony. A late-middle-aged native man dressed casually, but who carried himself with confidence and power, approached me and introduced himself as John. I offered my name and, without further pleasantries, we immediately launched into our joint purpose—creating a ritual that merged the male and female energies of the serpent mound, so that all the men and women who had gathered could participate. Even though John and I had never met, there was a comfort and trust in the way we worked together that allowed both of us to move forward or back as was necessary to balance the yin and yang currents.
After the ceremony, John generously invited the group back to his home on Rice Lake for a salmon barbecue. It was very relaxed and we were sitting enjoying the day when it occurred to me that John’s manner was not only that of a spiritual but also of a business leader. “John,” I asked with curiousity, “What do you do when you’re not leading rituals at the serpent mound?”
He smiled at me, with a mischievous glance, which acknowledged that I’d looked through one of his personas to see another. “I’m the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of Canada,” he replied.
“And what about you?” he inquired, indicating by his look that he knew that I too had another line of work.
“Oh,” I replied without hesitating, “I’m a consultant and the Atomic Energy Commission is one of my clients.”
We both broke into laughter at how the universe had brought us together in such a strange way to do one thing, while it had us working in the business world in another role. John and I had very similar points of view regarding our willingness to work in whatever setting we were called in order to develop more consciousness.
